The Gold Rush - A Bicycle Journey Through American History
By: John Stuart Clark
In
1849, several hundred thousand Europeans and Americans trekked
across the country for the gold fields of California - the Gold
Rush being a defining moment in this country's short (European)
history. John Clark followed the same historic roads and trails,
retracing that journey through history. His travels took him
through violent ghettos and even more violent hurricanes, desert
sandstorms and blazing heat - cycling in areas where no sane
person would choose to cycle. Along the way, Clark meets crazed
war veterans, failing farmers, unemployed Mexican migrants,
the washed up and those left over from the American Dream, which
the Gold Rush had done so much to form. His journey also takes
him through the wildest, the most beautiful and remotest parts
of America. Part travelogue, part political history, all incredibly
well-written

Beat
The Heat - How to Handle Encounters with Law Enforcement"
By: Katya Komisaruk
Saying
the right thing during an encounter with the police can mean
the difference between going home and going to jail. Beat the
Heat gives you a set of easy-to-remember legal tactics for protecting
yourself and the people you care about. Written by a Harvard-trained
criminal defense lawyer, this illustrated street law manual
teaches you exactly:
• what to say if you're pulled over
• how to read a search warrant
• what you should know about undercover cops and informants
• how to handle police questioning
• what to tell the judge to get your bail reduced
• how to get the best work out of your public defender
or private attorney
Reading
this book is like getting a one-on-one coaching session with
your lawyer. It's written in plain English and comes with sample
documents (including warrants and subpoenas), so you can learn
how to deal with them before trouble's at your door. There are
special sections for minors and non-U.S. citizens, as well as
a chapter on suing the police. The best part is the numerous
cartoon sequences, which demonstrate how cops manipulate people
they're questioning or searching-and what techniques you need
to win this game.

Critical
Mass - Bicycling's Defiant Celebration
Edited By: Chris Carlsson
This
leaderless, grassroots social movement cuts through the noise
and inertia of car-clogged urban transportation and teaches
us to carve a wedge of our city for our dreams. So says essayist
Anna Sojourner in this pushy and irreverent collection of inkworthy
social critique and optimistic celebration. Four dozen contributors
document, define and drive home the beauty of a quiet ride with
a thousand friends, the anarchy of grassroots inspiration, the
melodrama of media coverage and the fight for the survival of
our cities.

Days of War, Nights of Love: Crimethinc for Beginners
Less
of a novel and more of an exploded manifesto, Days of War, Nights
of Love might be just what we need. It is the type of book you'd
thumb through in the store and actually want to buy (or steal).
. . Topics range from anarchy to hierarchy, work to sex, alienation
to liberation and technology, but every page burns with a passion
for a freer life. . . The books vehement insistence that living
is more important than art carries the argument beyond the typical
debate. When you make it to the end, the personal testimonials
about not working and the closing art pieces become an aria
of voices urging you to close the book and live. Glorious, even
for the most cynical reader. What more can we ask from a book.

Direct Action: Memoirs Of An Urban Guerilla.
By Ann Hansen.
The Vancouver 5, or Squamish 5, were 5 Canadians convicted in
the early 80s of (successfully) bombing a hydro-electric power
sub-station, the Litton Systems plant in Toronto, where components
for Cruise Missiles were being made, and several Red Hot Video
stores, accused of selling violent pornography. Now, finally,
twenty years later, Ann Hansen, who served 7 years for her involvement,
tells the true gripping saga of an anarchist guerilla group.
From its origins in the Canadian anarchist and counter-cultural
milieu of the late 70s/early 80s; to going underground, and
a clandestine life of arms drills, explosive practice, stealing
cars, and (failed) armored car heists; to the massive reaction
and surveillance of a state that felt (understandably) very
much under attack, and the subsequent 'trial by media' of those
involved - this is very real incredible revolutionary 'true-crime'
tale of unrepentant action. 480 pages of fast-paced narrative
are topped off with Communiques issued for all the actions,
and Ann Hansen's Statement To The Court Before Sentencing. A
triumph of storytelling, history and very real debate about
movement tactics, goals, and vision. "Hansen's story is
an intense, articulate rendering of her motivations and desire
to be part of an effective revolutionary force for social justice."

Evasion
A
288 page novel-like narrative, Evasion is one person's travelogue
of thievery and trespassing across the country, evading not
only arrest, but also the 40-hour workweek and hopeless boredom
of modern life. The journey documents a literal and metaphorical
reclamation of an individual's life and the spaces surrounding
themscamming, squatting, dumpstering, train hopping and
shoplifting a life worth living and a world worth the fighting
for.

It
Disappears
It
Disappears opens with snow falling: a few large white dots against
of a background of black. The drawings close in on a house,
well-banked by snow, a boy sitting on a couch. The boy begins
a journey, his hand placed on a doorknob. After he leaves the
house he begins to grow older. In the mountains one night the
smoke from his fire announces "you're here." The smoke
chases and catches him. A cartoon animal emerges from the gloom.
"It's really not safe here," it says.
The boy travels with the animal. It has many things to say.
"I have a friend who only reads periodicals He subscribes
to 28 titles each month and hasn't read a book in three years.
He feels so overwhelmed by the allure of modernity, like he'll
miss what's just happening right now. And now. And now."
A rhapsody on memory and the anticipation of the future dissolving
into the receding waters of the past, Powell's graphic novel
traces a journey of self-discovery and the uneasy realization
that everything, eventually, disappears. However, underlying
this realization is an almost cosmic hope that human interaction
and history can transcend the corrosive effects of time.

Off
the Map
A punk rock vision quest told in the tradition of the anarchist
travel story, Off the Map is narrated by two young women as
they discard their maps, fears, and anything resembling a plan,
and set off on the winds of the world. Without the smug cynicism
that seems to permeate most modern radical tales, this story
is told with genuine hope, and a voice that never loses its
connection with the mysteries of life, even in the midst of
everyday tragedies. Wandering across Europe, the dozens of vignettes
are the details of the whole—a squatted castle surrounded
by tourists on the Spanish coast, a philosophizing businessman
on the highways of France, a plaça full of los crustos
in Barcelona, a diseased foot in a Belgian train squat, a glow
bug on the dew-covered grass of anywhere—a magical, novel-like
folktale for the end of the world.

Recipes
For Disaster - An Anarchist Cookbook
Three
years in the making, Recipes for Disaster is the long-awaited
follow-up to the CrimethInc. collective’s notorious first
book, Days of War, Nights of Love. This 624-page manual complements
the romance and idealism of that earlier work with practical
information and instruction. Over thirty collectives collaborated
in testing, composing, and editing the book’s 62 sections,
which range fromAffinity Groups, Coalition Building, and Mental
Health to Sabotage, Squatting, and Wheatpasting. These are illustrated
with extensive technical diagrams and first-hand accounts, and
prefaced with a thorough discussion of the diverse roles direct
action can play in social transformation. If you’re looking
for a tactical handbook for revolutionary action, look no further.

YA
BASTA!: Ten Years Of The Zapatista Uprising - Writings Of Subcomandante
Insurgente Marcos
For ten years a voice from deep within the mountains and jungles
of Mexico has inspired us to fight back.
The most comprehensive collection of essays and communiqués
of Subcomandante Marcos, ¡Ya Basta! chronicles the written
voice of the Zapatista movement and its struggle to open a space
within the neoliberal, globalized landscape for the oppressed
people of the world. It includes nearly 700 pages, and the tenth
year anniversary communiqués.
How after 10 years does the historic and ongoing Zapatista uprising
continue to transform the world? How did the poetic fury of
their movement become part of the rising tide that sent waves
of resistance crashing through the streets of Seattle, Genoa,
Quebec, and Washington D.C.? Was it their weapons? Was it their
words? After reading ¡Ya Basta! you'll find that they
can be one and the same.
Includes forewords by Noam Chomsky and Noami Klein; and is edited
and with a contribution by Ziga Vodovnik.

1/2 Left #9
(32 pages, 1/2 size, copied)
This classic is back after a many year hiatus! Mike writes a
personal zine about his life that used to consist of punk rock
insanity, drinking, and rabble rousing. Now he's a father who
works in a chocolate factory and "got punched in the face
by responsibility". Mike's zine has always been painfully
honest and emotionally charged and gripping. He really puts
his heart out for all to examine. In it's heyday it inspired
a sea of imitators but it was all well deserved and no one could
affectively use his style as well as he did.

America?
(28 pages, 1/4 size, copied)
Travis is a true writer. I imagine him huddled in a corner somewhere
scribbling these words all hyped up on coffee. These stories
allude to roaming around on tour, growing older in the punk
scene, being a harsh critic of things you come into contact
with, and recognizing the genius of the people around you. Very
little of the writing presented here touches on specifics but
that's the beauty of it - it's so easy to apply to your own
life and relate to Travis' feelings. All I can say is 'wow!'

Chainbreaker
#3
(40 Pages, 1/2 legal, copied)
Shelley is a bike mechanic in New Orleans and she loves bikes
with a passion. This zine explores the history of the bicycle
touching on race and gender issues including the bicycles place
in womens's movements in fashion and mobility. This zine doesn't
stop there though; it also discusses a female bicyclsits view
of street harassment and simple tips about biking like how to
ride, how to fix a flat, and how to make a bike tube belt. And
it goes on to talk about the Plan B volunteer run bike project
in New Orleans and it's place in the community. Shelley talks
about being a female bike mechanic and how empowering it is
to defy stereotypes of women as mechanics. This zine is so inspiring
and encouraging. After I first read it I wanted to grab a wrench
and get to work, and I did at Plan B. Chainbreaker is an amazing
zine for those who are curious as to what all this bike business
is all about or those who have been into bikes for years. It
also contains some of Merry Death's beautiful art work.

Civilization Will Eat Itself
(48 pages. 1/2 sized, copied)
An entirely hand done account from a primitivist point of view
about utilizing technology while realizing the contradiction, society
imposing work and school upon us, and the way Romans at the
end wrote history as if their empire wasn't about to crumble.
Maybe they didn't realize it or maybe they were trying to prevent
the public from realizing it. The good seems new, the bad seems
old and accepted, and questionable changes are portrayed as
good. The US writes the history books nowadays; are we about
to be overtaken by metaphorical Visigoths? It's all hand written
in a format that aesthetically reads very nicely. Ran dosen't
talk about these things like he's the expert; he explores it
like it's a conversation with a friend. Come check out the computer
geek who thinks that computers are the downfall of society.
A very interesting and exciting read.

different stories that draws frustrations as well.

a collection of comics, drawings and handwritten text, compiling
the various titles that he published under Migraine Comics in
the mid to late nineties. The book is cohesive and doesn't resemble
a comic anthology as much as a handwritten account of Al's thoughts

and meaning as well as the mental processes of growing up from
his days in Portland, moving to Providence, and a walking tour
of his hometown. The entire book is handwritten and illustrated
